Check valves are one-way valves that prevent water from reversing.  In the event of a power outage, check valves prevent water from spilling out of the pond and flooding your yard (and potentially beaching fish, depending on the amount of drainage). They also contain water in the bio-filter, keeping beneficial bacteria alive. Union connections easily remove a valve from a pipe without cutting it out.

**Note: It is important to disconnect check valves during winter months to prevent water from freezing in your water feature's plumbing.
